A day in Coburg

A day in Coburg. And dinner with us.

Spending a day in Coburg? Lisa has a plan for you – from the fortress to the last glass of wine on Steingasse.

  1. Morning

Up to the Crown of Franconia.

Veste Coburg sits some 160 metres above the town – no wonder they call it the “Crown of Franconia”. Martin Luther lived here for half a year in 1530. Today its art collections show works by Cranach, Dürer and Riemenschneider.

Our tip: walk up through the Hofgarten – around 30 hectares of English landscape park between Schlossplatz and the fortress.

Path up to Veste Coburg with walls and tower under a blue sky
  2. Midday

Bratwurst on the square – or lunch with us.

On the market square, Coburg bratwurst is grilled over pine cones and served in half a double roll. A must. Rather sit down? Wednesday to Friday we serve lunch from 11:30 am to 2 pm – a few steps from the square, on Steingasse.

Take the bratwurst anyway. We're not jealous.

Weekly market on Coburg's market square with flower stalls
  3. Afternoon

Ehrenburg Palace and a little piece of England.

On Schlossplatz stands Ehrenburg Palace, the town residence of the Dukes of Coburg since 1543. A guided tour shows you historic rooms and the Giants' Hall, whose ceiling is carried by 28 Atlas figures.

And on the market square you'll meet Prince Albert: Queen Victoria was there in 1865 when his monument was unveiled.

  4. Evening

    And then: dinner on Steingasse.

To finish, come to us. A glass of Perrier-Jouët, fresh oysters or caviar on ice, then René's steak and a wine from winemakers we know.

We're open in the evening Tuesday to Friday from 5 pm and on the first Saturday of every month. Monday, Sunday and the other Saturdays we're closed. Best to book a table ahead – we only have 35 seats inside and 26 outside.
